Fun and Engaging
Each exciting story is centred around the monster characters that children love. These are phonics books that children want to read!
Monster phonics has transformed early reading in our school. The children love the monsters and since receiving the new reading books have been so excited about reading at home.
Monster Phonics makes it really easy for my son to recognise the sounds and he can easily read far more complicated words than usual. He feels confident and pleased he can read the book through.

Meeting the needs of the Ofsted Primary Framework
Matched to Letters and Sounds and the KS1 Curriculum, Monster Phonics books ensure that children are reading using the phonics that has been taught. Each book focuses on a key grapheme and ability-appropriate high-frequency words. Our books are also priced cost-effectively to allow schools to buy enough books for home-school reading. Read more about the Ofsted Primary Framework.
Our phonic reading books are also matched to the Monster Phonics Programme, a complete scheme which meets all statutory requirements. Monster Phonics uses colour to help children learn the link between sound and spelling. This significantly improves progress, helping children to read with confidence. Find out how his works.
Phonics keyword and high-frequency word practice boxes at the start of each book help children to read the story with confidence. Stories include wow words and centre around the popular monster characters. Each book ends with questions to develop comprehension skills.
How Monster Phonics Accelerates Learning
Listen to a Monster Phonics Storytime
All graphemes in the Letters and Sounds and the KS1 Curriculum are taught across this phonics reading scheme which consists of 100 books.
Books have been grouped into 10 stages of 10 books.
To help teachers, we have categorised the stages into year groups, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, although there is some overlap of the graphemes taught in each.
Reception Books – Stages 1, 2 and 3
There are 30 books in the Reception stages.
Reception books support the teaching of initial sounds and consonant digraphs to help the fundamental stages of reading. The familiar characters and fun stories engage children in reading. Each Reception book has an optional section for an adult to read at the bottom of each page. This text is not critical for the understanding of the story but adds further detail to help bring the story to life.
Year 1 Books – Stages 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
There are 50 books in the Year 1 stages.
Stories are matched to the Year 1 graphemes in the KS1 curriculum.
