Monster Phonics at the National Education Show Cardiff 2025

Last week, the Monster Phonics team made their way to Cardiff for the National Education Show — and what a fantastic day it was! It was such a pleasure to meet so many passionate educators from across Wales and to share how our innovative, systematic phonics programme is helping transform the way children learn to read.

A huge thank you goes to the National Education Show organisers for putting on such a well-run, vibrant, and inspiring event. From the seamless setup to the engaging seminars and buzzing exhibition hall, everything was perfectly coordinated. The atmosphere was full of collaboration, energy, and a shared commitment to improving literacy across Wales.

With the latest updates to the Curriculum for Wales framework guidance, the importance of systematic and consistent phonics instruction has never been clearer. The guidance emphasises that phonics should focus on decoding words before moving on to comprehension and clarifies that visual cues should support, not replace, decoding. This reinforces the central role of systematic phonics in early reading — exactly what Monster Phonics delivers.

Our programme fully aligns with this approach, offering a consistent, evidence-informed, whole-school model that supports progress from Nursery through to Year 6.

NES1 Rhian, Amanda, and Sara led demonstrations throughout the day, showing how Monster Phonics simplifies planning, supports consistency, and makes phonics lessons engaging for every learner. Delegates told us how refreshing it was to see a programme that feels modern, inclusive, and affordable — a genuine solution to some of the challenges schools face with other schemes.

Visitors were delighted to learn that Monster Phonics includes full training as part of its membership, helping schools build confidence and consistency across staff. Schools already using the programme are seeing a real impact on pupils’ fluency and enjoyment of reading — clear evidence that systematic, whole-school phonics works.

Our stand was impossible to miss — bursting with colour, interactive displays, and, of course, our much-loved Monster Phonics characters! The stars of the day were without doubt Cool Blue, Miss Oh No, and Green Froggy, NES2who caused quite a stir on the exhibition floor. They were treated like true celebrities — posing for selfies, waving to crowds, and spreading smiles everywhere they went. It was wonderful to see how much joy and curiosity they sparked among teachers and delegates alike.

Delegates were particularly impressed by our multi-sensory resources, designed to support all learners — including those with dyslexia, EAL, and ALN

In their bright pink Monster Phonics vests, the Monster Phonics team were on hand all day to demonstrate the programme, answer questions, and share inspiring stories from schools already making a difference with Monster Phonics. NES3

We were also excited to launch our exclusive offer for schools in Wales:

The day was a wonderful celebration of the creativity, dedication, and passion of Welsh educators — and a reminder of the positive energy driving literacy improvement across the nation. We left Cardiff feeling inspired and excited to continue helping schools close the reading gap and bring phonics to life through colour, character, and fun!
