Are you ready for the Year 1 Phonics Check?

Ingrid Connors

The Phonics Screening Check is fast approaching, taking place in the week commencing Monday 10 June 2019. Remember it is supposed to be a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. The aim is to identify the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills.

Monster Phonics matches the National Curriculum and Letters and Sounds. Not only are all statuary requirements covered but revision is also built-in to secure prior learning. Formative assessments check for any gaps and our Mock Phonics Screening Checks are useful preparation. Our plans for the first week of Year 1 also focus on Nonsense and Real Word reading activities, introducing the check in a fun and engaging way.

Schools using Monster Phonics show a 10% improvement in the percentage of children passing the phonics screen, demonstrating the power of colour-coded phonics and engaging lessons.
