The Monster Phonics team made their way to Cardiff for the National Education Show. This was a fantastic opportunity to introduce our innovative phonics programme to educators across Wales.
With recent headlines reporting a “reading crisis in Wales” where “reading standards are a lottery”, we were especially proud to present Monster Phonics as a proven solution to transform phonics teaching and accelerate progress in reading.
Rhian Rogers and Joanna Peristiani showcased Monster Phonics – a systematic, consistent, whole-school approach to phonics and reading, designed to engage learners and deliver real results.
Speaking to so many educators, one thing was clear; unlike other phonics programmes that feel outdated, challenging to implement, and overly expensive, Monster Phonics is a fresh, engaging and cost-effective solution.
Everyone was delighted to hear that Monster Phonics includes comprehensive training in its membership and were eager to find out more about how the programme works to upskill staff.
Schools that have adopted Monster Phonics are already seeing a significant impact on their children’s reading abilities, proving the need for a systematic, consistent, whole-school approach – aligned with Estyn’s recommendations.
Our stand at the show certainly made an impression! With eye-catching displays and colourful graphics, we attracted a steady stream of interested visitors throughout the day. One event organiser even gave us an unofficial nod for having the ‘cutest’ stand, which made us smile!
People were drawn to the engaging, multi-sensory materials on display, and loved that everything was at their fingertips when exploring the programme online. We received plenty of positive feedback about how refreshing it was compared to the more rigid, template-driven phonics programmes currently on offer. After speaking with numerous educators specialising in dyslexia, EAL and ALN, many expressed how refreshing it was to see how inclusive Monster Phonics is.
They were particularly impressed by the uniqueness of our resources, which are designed to support all learners. A standout feature was our phonics kit bag, which includes flashcards with ‘off-white’ backgrounds—an essential detail that helps reduce visual stress for children with dyslexia and other ALN needs. Another popular product was our engaging comics for pupils in Y3-Y6, that offer a low cognitive load and engage even the most reluctant readers.
We were easily identifiable in our bright pink Monster Phonics vests, with Joanna and Rhian on hand to give demonstrations, answer questions, and share more about how our scheme supports schools.
The Monster Phonics characters were huge hit, sparking curiosity and lively conversations about how our unique characters help make phonics learning fun and memorable for children — at one point, we even had a queue of people waiting to try it out!
