Maximising Funding to Transform Your School: A Practical Guide for Headteachers

Ian Connors
ian connorsAs an ex-headteacher, I understand the immense pressure schools face to deliver exceptional outcomes, often with limited resources. In these challenging times, making the most of every scrap of funding available can be a game changer. Whether it’s enhancing literacy, supporting staff development, or creating a more inclusive learning environment, funding is the key to unlocking potential.
One area often overlooked by headteachers is phonics funding – a targeted resource that can significantly impact early reading outcomes for pupils in Reception and Key Stage 1. In this blog, I’ll provide an overview of available funding, share how to access it, and explain why focusing on people – not just the funds – leads to real change in schools.

The Accelerator Fund: Up to £9,000 for Early Reading Success

The Department for Education’s Accelerator Fund is designed to provide schools with the tools and training needed to transform early literacy. Schools can apply for up to £9,000 in funding to support phonics teaching and resources, helping pupils improve their reading skills regardless of background, ability, or need.

Who’s Eligible?

The eligibility criteria vary based on location and school performance. Here’s a breakdown:
  1. Priority Education Investment Areas (PEIAs): Schools in one of 24 identified areas can access the full £9,000 funding.
  2. Non-Priority Areas: Schools outside PEIAs can access up to £6,000, provided they match-fund 25% of the claim.
  3. Other Eligible Schools: Schools meeting two or more of the following criteria can apply:
    • Below-average phonics screening check results.
    • A high percentage of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium.
    • An Ofsted rating of Requires Improvement or Inadequate.
    • Higher-than-average numbers of pupils reading below age-related expectations.
    • Hard-to-reach groups (e.g., EAL, free school meals).

Why People Matter Most

While funding can provide essential resources and training, the real magic happens when schools invest in people. In my experience, the success of any intervention hinges on the commitment, creativity, and collaboration of the staff.
At Monster Phonics, we’ve seen first-hand how a well-trained, motivated team can transform a school. By working closely with schools to maximise the impact of funding, we’ve helped turn around literacy outcomes. The secret lies not just in the resources but in empowering teachers with the skills and confidence to implement change effectively.
We have supported a large number of schools who have used their Accelerator Fund allocation to transition to Monster Phonics. Alongside our free training and resources, we focused on building the capacity of teachers and support staff. The result? A marked improvement in pupils’ phonics screening check scores and, more importantly, a renewed sense of purpose among staff. It is not magic – it takes hard work but the increased funding really helps! Feel free to contact me for further support or information.
