TRULY MULTISENSORY

Kerry James

I completed my Masters Degree (MEd) in 2008 and ten years later in 2018, I found Monster Phonics.  The link? A new multisensory approach!

My final dissertation for my MEd involved research into whether preferred learning styles (PLSs) have an impact on the learning of spellings in Key Stage 1. My findings concluded that they do, thus meaning that teaching and learning Phonics using a multisensory approach, is essential if all learners are to progress as much as possible.

The first thirteen years of my teaching career was spent in Key Stage 2. Having started teaching children in Reception in 2014, I found myself using an assortment of resources in order to try and reach the true multisensory approach that I knew was the best method for the pupils in my class. When Ingrid came into our school and introduced Monster Phonics, I knew instantly that I had found the SSP scheme that was needed to teach in a truly multisensory way. It is a highly advanced multisensory approach that delivers fantastic results, It is also extremely fun and engaging for children.

The activities that are within the planning; whether in the review, input, practise or apply part of the lesson offer the scope for the three main learning styles; visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Colour-coded PowerPoints and flashcards, books, songs, dancing, actions, rhymes, indoor and outdoor scavenger hunts, hopscotch, using coloured craft items and playdough are just a few that are intrinsic to the scheme.

The added bonus is that all of this is ready to use, meaning that it is so time-saving. A ‘Wow moment’ when I found Monster Phonics, coupled with the fact that the children absolutely love this way of learning to read and spell.
