We explain to children that the tricky part of a word makes a different sound to the one that they have been taught. This is because Tricky Witch has cast a spell on the sound they know so well. We colour code these tricky graphemes gold. The ‘o’ is the words ‘come’ and ‘some’ makes an ‘u’ sound.

The ‘a’ in ‘what’ makes an ‘o’ sound and the ‘ai’ in ‘said’ makes an ‘e’ sound. The ‘er’ in ‘were’ is also not phonetic, it makes an ‘ur’ sound.
