Monster Phonics schools that embed the approach are consistently above national averages for the Phonics Screening Check pass rate. Schools who adopt the Monster Phonics approach see an average increase of 13% in their Phonics Screen Check result. The improvement is even greater in schools with a high number of EAL pupils as Monster Phonics teaches phonics and tricky high-frequency words alongside pronunciation through the visual colour-coding. The programme is also geared to language development through its reading scheme and materials. Monster Phonics support English language learning better than any other scheme.
“After a year of trying different phonics programmes, we came across Monster Phonics. It has transformed the phonics teaching within our school. It has enabled us to have a consistent approach to phonics lessons in a large international school setting due to the training and support from the Monster Phonics team, as well as the in-depth planning and resources provided. This has supported staff of all levels of experience to successfully deliver phonics lessons. We love the colour coding of books, especially for our EAL students and their parents. The concept is fun and engaging for children of all ages – we have even observed children bringing the monsters and their actions into their play.”

Monster Phonics was developed in the international school setting to meet the needs of multi-lingual children.
English is a complex language with over 144 ways of spelling only 44 sounds. It also uses many high frequency words that are not phonetically decodable. Monster Phonics support children with pronunciation cues to help them to remember the link between spelling and sound. Astounding improvements in progress were found even in the initial research phase. The programme is now a leading DfE validated phonics scheme in the UK.
Ingrid Connors, the Founder of Monster Phonics is a phonics specialist with over 20 years experience in schools including 8 years in the international sector.
“As a teacher working in international schools, I became focused on how we could help all children progress more quickly in phonics. With so many nationalities, levels of English and high transition, how could we help children to quickly acquire phonics to read and write with confidence. I used my research background to look at this from a problems perspective – if we can find the key stumbling blocks and provide strategic support to help children overcome these, we can accelerate progress. Two years of testing and learning, in an outstanding international school led to the development of Monster Phonics. We found that progress is significantly improved for all learners, native speakers as well as EAL learners, so much so that Monster Phonics has become one of the leading DfE-validated phonics schemes in the UK. On a personal level – Monster Phonics is a mission, to improve outcomes of all children far and wide.”
