4 Phonics Activities to Keep Your Child Inspired this February Half Term

Joanna Peristiani

Are you looking to keep your child inspired this half term? As we know, maintaining continuity is crucial, and we’ve got just the solution for parents to keep their children learning – some engaging phonics activities. Here, you’ll discover easy to do activities that require little resources (most you’ll already have, or you’ll find linked for free within this blog) to enjoy with your children at home.

Scavenger Hunt

What you’ll need: Flashcards with letters written on them (download for free here)

Instructions:

  1. Hide the letter flashcards around the house (or, if the weather permits,) the garden.
  2. Provide your child with a basket or bag to collect the ‘treasures’ – think Easter egg hunt!
  3. Begin the hunt by explaining to your child they need to search for as many flashcards as they can
  4. After your child finds each letter, ask them to name the letter and its associated sound.
  5. Once they are all found, repeat the letter names and sounds, noting any they may find more challenging to work on later.
  6. Why not try the same activity with words!

Monster Stories

What you’ll need: pencil paper and your imagination!

Instructions:

  1. Be an author…write a story about a monster character. This could be one of the Monster Phonics characters or a new monster you have created.
  2. Use your imagination to create a fun filled adventure for your monster.
  3. Don’t forget to include some illustrations to bring your story to life!

Sound Soup Sensory Play

What you’ll need: A large bowl or container, water, foam letters or alphabetic letter bath toys, a scoop and some towels for cleanup

Instructions:

  1. Fill the bowl with water and add the letters
  2. Invite your child to explore the alphabet soup sensory bin. Encourage them to use the scoop to search and scoop out letters.
  3. As your child retrieves each letter, ask them to name the letter and make it’s sound.
  4. Add a challenge: have your child fish out specific letters that you call out
  5. Play and learn by allowing your child to explore the water, experimenting with combinations and sounds. Encourage imaginative play by pretending to cook up words or spell their favourite things.
  6. Clean up: drain the water and use the towels to dry off the letters and containers

If you’re looking for letters, try our magnetic letters kit!

Take Part in the Superhero Spelling Challenge

This activity allows your child to get creative and the opportunity for their creations to be published in Superhero Spellings next set of comics.

What you’ll need: Superhero template which can be downloaded in colour, or black and white here

Instructions:

  1. Print out the template and explain to your child they get to create their own superhero. Templates can be downloaded here!
  2. Let your child get creative with colours, design, names and their chosen special ability
  3. Once your child has created their superhero, take a picture or scan it to [email protected] enter them for a chance to have their hero come to life and feature in Superhero Spelling comics.
  4. Encourage imaginative play: create stories with the new character, exploring their adventures and heroic actions
