Children starting this phase will already have experience of a range of listening activities, involving songs, stories and rhymes.
- They will be able to distinguish between speech sounds.
- Many will be able to blend and segment words orally.
- Some will also be able to recognise rhyming words and suggest rhyming
words. Phase 2 continues to provide speaking and listening opportunities, so it is not necessary for children to be able to recognise rhyming on entry.
What is taught?
2. Children progress from oral to written blending and segmenting
3. Read and spell some VC and CVC words (spell either by using magnetic letters or by writing the letters on paper or on whiteboards)
4. Read two-syllable words (such as sunset. Begin to read simple captions
5. Children learn to read some high-frequency ‘tricky’ words: I, the, to, go, no.
Monster Phonics makes learning ‘tricky’ words easier and faster. By colour-coding and grouping words, children can remember spelling and learn similar spelling all in one go.
Colour-coding for sound means that children can see the link between spelling and sound. Teachers find that sound buttons are not necessary as the link is so clear.
Monster Phonics makes the tricky words much eaiser to learn. Download the Phase 2 Tricky Word Tabletop Card and Phase 2 Tricky Words Flashcards.
